AP Human Geography 2009-2010 Syllabus
Week 1-2 August 24-31, 2009 Unit 1
Students will be introduced to Human Geography’s basic concepts. The Key subjects of Geography’s nature and its perspectives, Population- its growth, decline and movement, Cultural patterns and processes, diffusion and its environmental impact, Political organization of space on the earth- its territorial dimensions, evolution and challenges, Agricultural and Rural land use from the Neolithic era to modern genetically modified foods, Industrialization and Economic Development and Cities and Urban Land Use. Students will respond to questions 1-5 on page 8 in a minimum of one paragraph per question. Class work Grade due on August 28, 2009.
Assignments
A-Students will outline each chapter from 2-14 based on the intro questions at the beginning of each chapter
B-Students will create a dictionary in which they will fully define all of the terms at the end of each chapter. Students may write or type these assignments. If you select to write these assignments each must be in the same spiral notebook. If you elect to type these assignments they must be in the same file/flash drive. EXTRA CREDIT is earned only for typing each and every homework assignment. All the vocabulary terms on page32 will be the first entries into your dictionary. Due on Monday August 31, 2009.

Week 2-3 September 1-9, 2009 Unit 2
Students will study population geography this week. They will learn where people in the world live, the distribution of population and the density of population around of the globe. Students will delve in the causes of the rise and decline in population throughout history. Students will learn how to update and interpret the demographic transition model. SW examine why the composition based on age, gender and socio-economic status. SW also see what maladies exist and have the greatest impact upon population. Finally, SW observe the impact from a negative and a positive perspectives of government involvement in population.
A- The outline of unit 2 based on the questions located on page 37 (1-4). The questions must be stated and responded to in a minimum of one paragraph. Due on Tuesday September 1, 2009
B- Add the vocabulary terms with full definitions using the words on page 66. Follow guidelines stated above. Due September 9, 2009.
C- On-line assignments Current Events Related to Population w/2-3 paragraph summary and explaination of importance. Due on September 9, 2009.
D- Exam on Unit 2 will be on Wednesday September 9, 2009
Week 3-4 September 10-16, 2009 Unit 3
Students will study what migration is and the various types of migration. SW look into the causes behind migration (push and pull factors) and the Laws of Migration. After students understand why people migrate they will look into where they migrate and why one location offers more to differing groups. SW also learn the role government plays in allowing migration, restrictions on migration, particularly since September 11, 2001.

Week 4-5 September 18-24, 2009 Unit 4
Students will delve into what local and popular cultures are. SW discuss how each is developed and sustained. We will also look into the differences between rural and urban sectors of the community. SW learn how time-space compression and distance-decay has helped to spread popular culture. Finally, SW see how the physical landscape is marked by various cultures

Week 6 September 25- October 1, 2009 Unit 5
Students will learn what identities are and how each is constructed. SW delve into the causes, actions and reactions to racism in different parts of the world. SW learn how placed affect identities and vice versa. SW will see how power relationships subjugate certain groups; women, religious minorities, ethnic minorities etc…

Week 7 October 2-12, 2009 Unit 6
Students will discuss what languages are, how languages evolved and the role languages play in shaping cultures. SW also learns how languages are distributed across the planet. SW learn about the Renfrew Model of language dispersal, the proposed hearths of the major languages and how each evolved. SW also discusses the diffusion pattern of languages. SW answers the question of whether or not there is a global language. Finally, Sw discuss the role language plays in making a place what it is.
A- Students will outline Unit 6 using questions on page 152 (1-4), using previous guideline. Due on October 2, 2009.

Week 8-9 October 13-19, 2009 Unit 7
SW discuss the origins of belief systems/religion worldwide. SW learn how religions grew and impacted cultures they came into contact with. SW delve into the birthplace/hearths of major world religions and follow the diffusion pattern each took. SW discovers the basic principle of several major faiths and how culture, government and changing views have impacted these tenants’ over the history of a faith. SW lean to identify religious impacts on the cultural and physical landscape. Finally, SW the negatives side of religion and how it impacts people in terms of: interfaith conflict, intra-faith conflict, gender discriminations and political disputes.
A-Students will outline unit 7 using questions on page 179. Due on October 13, 2009

Power point presentation on the Unit assigned to each group is due on October 20
